A food visit to the Balestier area isn’t complete without a stop to whampoa market . Sometimes known as Whampoa Drive Food Centre, the huge complex is split into two blocks and a wet market, where you’ll be spoiled for choice by the variety of stalls. The clear soupy beef noodles are more on the watery side, with a robust flavour that doesn't give off a strong, gamey smell. The kway teow is chewy and has a nice texture that pairs well with the bursts of flavour from sprigs of coriander. The chilli is also Teochew style, with garlic and ginger for heat instead of chilli padi. 

The beef slices aren’t overcooked, and had a bit of pink tinge. Compared to other beef noodles that sometimes add tendons, the Teochew beef noodles are a much simpler affair.
