Don & Udon

It’s not often that you’d find not one, but two stalls in the same food complex offering delectable Japanese food on a shoestring. Don & Udon is a Japanese stall that focuses on bentos, as well as rice- (dons) and noodle-bowls – all of which fall under just $10.

The saba and teriyaki bento set ($6) comes with a sizable piece of saba fish and a few slices of fried chicken katsu. The tender chicken slices are covered with breadcrumbs, which add a nice crunch. The teriyaki sauce isn’t too sweet, with the toppings of nori (seaweed) and sesame seeds offering a little more texture. The saba fish has a golden crispy skin, with a slight salt crust. The fish itself is light and flavourful; I found myself finishing it in no time!

The katsu curry don ($5.50), on the other hand, failed to impress. At first glance, the Japanese curry is thick and viscous, with an attractive sheen to it. However, the katsu curiously seemed to be missing; I dug into the dish, only to find the (now soggy) fried chicken under the top layer of curry. I wish that the chicken was served separately if only to preserve the crunch of the batter. Overall, I found the dish to be a little too mushy, as well as on the saltier side.

You will probably fare better with the bento sets or rice bowls and, if you’re a fan of unagi, their unagi don is priced at only $7.50.
